Tonight’s International Want of the Night is a trifecta of reasonably affordable hot hatches. Which would you choose?
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
WILDCARD CHALLENGER!!!!!
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Or just rank ‘em, I’d hate to burn any of the four.

I meant it.

DD Peugeot Track Lancia, Burn GTI and GT Turbo

Probably the right answer, or:
DD: Renault and Puegeot
Track: Lancia and GTI
I just really want the Peugeot.

DD Pug
Track Renault
Rally Lancia
Burn Golf

Hoccy’sclose but not quite right:
DD the Renault
Track the Pug
Rally the Lancia
Burn the Golf
The Renault’s the better daily: more comfy suspension, more midrange go, lighter steering, better seats. But it doesn’t have the brakes for track work due to the small wheels, and the turbo means it doesn’t have the on-the-limit throttle steer ability of the Pug, so that one wins on the track.
(I’ve driven both extensively, back in the day. And the Golf, a bit. Never had the pleasure of driving an Integrale though)

Just get an AW11 MR2 and outspeed and outfun them all.

Couldn’t bring myself to burn any of them.
But ranked:
#1 205
#2 Renault
#3 Lancia
#4 Golf

DD and Track the Lancia until one of the following happens:
-It kills you.
-It breaks apart due to rust.

No love for the Ford XR2 (1983 Mk1).
http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C730910
or a
Ford Sierra RS500 (1987)
((granted the RS500 is a bit more expensive but there is still the regular Ford Sierra Cosworth which you can get for half the price))

I'll DD the Golf, probably because parts will be easier to find than the other three when it breaks down. I'll Rally the Renault, because it was just meant to go balls out on a dirt sweeper. The other two are the losers in this one. Although how about I just say I burn them, and keep them hidden in a barn for later use.

DD: Pug and Renault
Track: Lancia
Burn: Golf

DD the 205
Track Rally the Delta
Burn the Golf

DD the Peugeot and the Renault, track (preferably dirt) the Lancia, burn the VW because there's plenty more Mk2 Golfs around here.

RS500's were all over my $20k limit, otherwise they’d be the highest picks. XR2's didn’t really show up, but a bunch of XR3's did

This is why we can’t have nice things. Well, you, as I already own a 205 GTi (and a 205 CTi) and a mk2 Golf (54 HP).
Evil laughter :)

I’m considering importing/finding a 205 GTi as a light/fun alternatively to the TA. Are they reasonably reliable?
![]() 04/12/2016 at 12:43 |

Absolutely. If you don’t buy a molested one and take age into consideration I’d say it’s about as good as it gets. It’s no Corolla and old cars will always need something, but from a 1980s-car-in-2016 point of view it’s
very
easy to live with. Parts availability is good too, in Europe. I don’t drive mine much, but it really doesn’t need much either. After I had the neglect of the previous owner flushed out it has only needed fluids and filters basically.

True. I guess USD$20k for that period Ford-wise would be the XR3 like you said and non Cosworth XR4. But with the XR2 Mk1 comes the later and less desireable XR2 Mk2 (probably more of a maybe not desire but I want because many Brits grew up with them).

I’ve never driven any of them but I’d likely:
DD The Peugeot
Track the Renault.
Burn the....
Fuck, I’ll take them all.
